The White Dove of Desert

On April 8th, Muggsi and I went to mass at the Mission San Xavier del Bac in honor of my mother's birthday.  The church was built by the Jesuits in 1783.  Architecturally soft on the outside.

Oh, and the morning light.

Inside, marvelous statues. And dark...such contrast to the bright desert light outside.

The Mass was lovely.  A mix of Indians (the church is situated on a reservation), tourists and locals attended the mass.  Sitting in this beautiful space, remembering my mother on her birthday was peaceful.

  1. What a beautiful tribute to your mother on her birthday...so very special.

seeing the church through your eyes is a lovely experience....and capturing that moment of the sunlight rising to meet the rooftop is glorious. I can only imagine how every inch of the interior called out to be recorded...a grand space.

  2. The photographs of Mission San Xavier take me back to the time I spent in Mexico. I live in Arizona and plan to take a trip to see the church myself. Thank you for the inspiration. My good friend Iona Drozda encouraged me to write to you and let you know that how much I enjoy your wonderful art!I am originally from Cleveland as well.

  3. San Xavier is beautiful - I've always loved seeing old missions. Next time you're in the old west you might like to check out the Salt Mission Trail in NM. I still have to say NM is my favorite :)

  4. Hello to all! Life has been crazy busy with minimal time for blogging let alone making art. A reponse to all your comments is in order before I post the last Arizona segment.
Yes, D and hw; the interior of San Xavier is a grand space; such contrast to the surrounding desert. I'm so glad I was able to be there on my mom's birthday.
Saralinda, I hope you can make it to see the church. Welcome to Blogland, I popped over to your blog and will visit soon. I see you live in Sedona~~on my list of places to visit. I have family in Phoenix, I hope next time I visit I can make it to Sedona.
Refracted; I hope to make it to NM sometime. I'd love to spend time painting there, perhaps a workshop sometime. I'll keep the Salt Mission Trail (which I googled~~looks beautiful, fantastic!) in mind :)
